The Horticultural Society of India under Ministry of Agriculture is organising 5th Indian Horticulture Congress from November 6-9, 2012 at Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana. The society has been organising congresses biennially since 2004. The Four earlier Congresses were successfully organised at New Delhi (2004 & 2010), Shilong (2007) and Bhubaneswar (2008) on different topical issues.

Objectives :
1.  To take stock of the researchable issues in different horticultural crops, e.g. fruit and plantation, vegetable,tuber and spices, flower,medicinal and aromatic plants.
2.  To discuss the reorientation in education and transfer of technology in horticulture sector.
3.  To discuss the potential of new tools and techniques in biotechnology for crop improvement.
4.  To asses the potential of advances made and preparedness for addressing biotic and abiotic stresses.
5.  To share the innovative technological advancements in Hi-Tech and peri-urban horticulture and innovations by public and private sector including farmers.
6.  To analyze the development in logistics for post-harvest management and innovative marketing and trade strategies.

• New tools and novel biotechnological applications: Genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, novel genes and  promoters, MAS and precision breeding, allele mining, association mapping.
• Hi-Tech interventions: High density planting and canopy management, micro-irrigation;fertigation; automation in production; protected cultivation; soilless culture (hydroponics & aeroponics), vermi-composting and bio-fertilizers, automated plants propagation, micro-propagation, and intensive cropping systems for small farms.
• Peri-urban and commercial horticulture: Implications and scope in India, waste recycling, eco-tourism, mushroom production, bee keeping ,agri-food parks and nurSery management and medicinal plants production.
4.  Biotic and Abiotic Stress Mitigation and Management
• Biotic stresses: Development of stress tolerant genotypes/varieties, detection kits, physiological and complex disorers in perennial fruit crops namely mango malformation, guava wilt, citrus decline, coconut wilt, leaf curl in tomato, purple blotch in onion, root-knot nematodes; effective management protocol of pets and diseases, new molecules in controlling  diseases and pets; forecasting of weather associated pest and disease, role of micronutrients.
• Abiotic stresses: Extending horticulture in marginal soils, e.g. saline, alkaline, waterlogged and wastelands. Mitigating extreme environmental  threats, air pollution, and high and low temperature/humidity.
5.  Advances in Post-Harvest Management
Shortage and glut crisis management in horticultural commodities, use of agrochemicals in pre- and Post-harvest management. Status of pre-cooling units, primary processing units, ripening chamber, cold chain system, CA/MA storage, multi-use cold storages, innovative packaging for fresh and processed produce and products, novel processed products.
6.  Innovative Marketing Strategies
Organized retailing of fresh and processed horticultural produce, FDI model in retail sector: Preparedness and policy intervention,need and status of marketing intelligence, fresh fruit and vegetable import and their effect on domestic production and trade, export  scenario:newer emerging markets, standards in horticulture, breeders right and patent issues in import of planting material, seed standards in perennial fruits nursery, nursery registration and Horticulture data base.
7.  Innovation in Horticulture
Innovation made by different stakeholders, progressive farmers and SHGs whoare particularly from private sector (NGO & farmers) in any aspect of variety development, mechanized horticultural production and management will be discussed.
